Coolmax! What is it and why we use it. (2 minute read)

Pretty much since day one, we have been using Coolmax in all our race socks…and now shorties.

As a textile designer, I have always been on the hunt for great fibres that will help improve performance and comfort while exerting myself.

Interestingly Coolmax was not on the top of my list when starting Zeffz as it was quite expensive and it was hard to know if what certain mills were sending me was actually Coolmax or just a cheaper knockoff.

During the first 8 months of creating the first Zeffz sock, I tried several synthetic fibres for the race sock but just couldn’t get the feel I was looking for.

By accident, I was doing some work in the denim industry and came across Levi's commuter range and their Coolmax T-shirts, I was instantly blown away by how well the t-shirts felt against the skin and how nice they were to wear when I was riding into work..it was really nice to wear the same t-shirt I rode into work all day and not worry about it being all wet and smelly.

This mini revelation made me finally give Coolmax a go and after a few more months of testing the Race socks were finally ready.

Below is a short explanation of what Coolmax fibre is and it’s benefits.

Coolmax is a type of polyester fibre that is specifically designed for use in athletic and performance wear. It was first introduced in the early 1980s by the global materials science company, DuPont, and has since become a popular choice for athletes and outdoor enthusiasts alike.

So what makes Coolmax so special, and what are its performance benefits? Let's take a closer look.

One of the key benefits of Coolmax is its superior moisture-wicking capabilities. Unlike cotton, which absorbs sweat and can become heavy and uncomfortable, Coolmax is engineered to pull moisture away from the skin and disperse it across the surface of the fabric, where it can evaporate quickly. This helps to keep the wearer feeling cool and dry, even during intense physical activity.

In addition to its moisture-wicking properties, Coolmax is also lightweight and breathable, which makes it an excellent choice for warm-weather activities. It is also easy to care for, as it can be machine-washed and dried without losing its performance benefits.

Another key feature of Coolmax is its durability. Because it is made from high-quality polyester fibre, it is resistant to wear and tear and can stand up to repeated washings and heavy use without losing its shape or performance capabilities.

But perhaps the most important benefit of Coolmax is how it helps regulate body temperature. By pulling moisture away from the skin and allowing it to evaporate quickly, Coolmax helps to keep the body cool and comfortable, even in hot and humid conditions. This can help to prevent heat-related illnesses and improve overall performance, particularly during endurance activities like long-distance running or cycling.

Overall, Coolmax is an excellent choice for anyone who is looking for high-performance athletic wear that is comfortable, durable, and able to withstand the rigours of intense physical activity. Whether you are a seasoned athlete or just starting out on your fitness journey, Coolmax can help you stay cool, dry, and comfortable, so you can focus on achieving your goals.
